Measuring is for the birds…Just ‘eyeball’ it

March 14th, 2013 | no comments

eyeballCan you think of anything more tedious and ‘diet-like’ than breaking out your scale and measuring cups to weigh and measure every piece of food that enters your mouth? Gag me! I mean really, how tedious is that? And more importantly—how likely are you to keep it up?

Don’t get me wrong, if you are following a recipe, you must measure the ingredients to yield the desired final product. But as a way of life? It just plain stinks! Let’s face it though, it is a good idea to know what a portion of peanuts looks like, otherwise you’re libel to eat half of the jar without realizing you just wolfed down eight servings! By the way…one serving of peanuts is the amount you can fit in your cupped hand. (one hand…not two!)

Here are some easy comparisons to help you figure out how many servings are on your plate:

   Deck of cards, iPhone or the palm of your hand  = 3 oz. meat (most of us eat 6 oz. or more!)

       CD = 1 oz. lunch meat; 1 pancake

     4 stacked dice = 1 ounce of hard cheese

       Poker chip = 1 Tablespoon

       Golf ball = 1/4 cup or 2 Tablespoons

       Baseball or a fist = 1 cup

       Your thumb tip or a postage stamp = 1 teaspoon

   Checkbook = 3 oz. fish

  Cupped hand = 1 portion of nuts
