Want to avoid health pain? Stop “slouching”
About two weeks ago, I began experiencing neck and shoulder pain…almost to the point of tears! I couldn’t figure out the cause. Did I do something in my sleep? Pull a muscle at the gym? So I mentioned it to my husband and his reply was, “I noticed you’ve been slouching more lately and your posture hasn’t been so great!” What does he know? And who asked him anyways? I was merely looking for someone to complain to, not offer their theory on my pain origination. Of course, when he tried to gently remind me of my negligent posture weeks before, I told him to mind his own business (in the nicest possible way, of course). But as I sat and thought about it, I realized he was right (ladies…don’t you hate it when that happens?) My lack of attention to posture finally caught up to me!
Any time you “slouch” for an extended period of time, pain will most certainly follow. This holds true for both your posture and daily habits. Maybe the pain comes in the form of weight gain, high cholesterol, diabetes or actual physical pain.
A little slouch is no problem. It’s simply part of living a balanced life (think Thanksgiving dinner). A lot of slouch is never good and will always catch up to you.
Think about your daily habits. What are you not doing consistently that you know you should be doing?
- Are you setting aside 30 minutes every day for exercise? If not, you’re slouching. And if you have pre-diabetes, you’re paving the path to full-blown diabetes. Get moving!
- Are you eating a few servings of fruits and vegetables every day? If not, you’re slouching. And if you want to stay off of blood pressure/cholesterol medication, you’d better roll your grocery cart through the produce section and load up!
- Are you eating breakfast every day? If not, you’re slouching. And if you are struggling to shed body fat, you’ll keep struggling. Eat something within two hours of waking up! (See “Did You Know?” below)
- Are you drinking enough water? If not, you’re slouching. And if you are constipated and want some relief, drink up…otherwise, stay constipated!
Good news! As I became more mindful of my posture, the pain began to subside. You can do this too! Where is your pain? What does it look like? What simple steps can you take to lessen the pain and improve your “posture”?
Did You Know?
If you skip breakfast you are more likely to overeat later in the day. I know, I know…you don’t have time, right? How about spending 30 seconds the night before to get your breakfast ready? Fill a Ziplock bag with 1/2 cup raw oats, 1 teaspoon brown sugar and 1/4 cup of walnuts, pecans or almonds. Before you leave for work, add a 1/2 cup of your favorite berry to the mix! When you get to work, pour it in a microwave safe bowl, add a 1/2 cup of water and pop in the microwave for 90 seconds. Tasty. Easy. Healthy!
