Wanna get healthy? Eat like Dan!
Dan isn’t a human being…he’s my beloved box turtle. And quite the handsome little guy, wouldn’t you agree? Now before you think I’m off my rocker and ‘unsubscribe’ from my blog posts or Food For Thought newsletter, hear me out.
Box turtles know how to eat! In fact, as I prepare his daily dish of food, I often think to myself: “We should all be eating like Dan.” When others witness the feeding session they can often be heard saying comments like:
“That turtle eats better than I do!”
“If only I could eat like that”
Good news—you can! Of course you’ll want to eat more food than Dan, but if you follow the basics of the box turtle diet for just one meal each day, you’ll be on your way to healthier body in no time! All you have to do is assemble a meal—like a salad or stir-fry—using a portion from each of the groups below. Or you could divide your plate into four quarters and put a portion of each on your plate. The possibilities are endless, so get creative!
1. One portion of protein (I’ll leave out the crickets, earthworms and slugs!):
2. One portion of vegetables:
- Bell peppers
- Green beans
- Sweet potatoes
- Any other vegetable of your choice
3. One portion of greens:
- Collard greens
- Mustard greens
- Red leaf lettuce
- Romaine lettuce
- Any other green of your choice
4. One portion of fruit:
- Any other fruit of your choice
If you look closely, you’ll notice the above “meal plan” is pretty close to what we should be doing anyways! Most of us know what we should be doing, but are we doing it? Are you doing it? Take a lesson from Dan— don’t just be a “knower” be a “doer”!
