Think yourself healthy
One of my favorite movies is The Karate Kid. Even though we own the DVD, my husband and I watch it every time it’s on television, reciting the lines word for word. To me, it’s about perseverance. Even when there seems no hope and your troubles appear larger than you, keep going. Don’t give up. But the lesson that Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel goes much deeper. He challenges him to look inside of himself for strength. That it’s not about “the fight” but what’s in the mind and heart.
My favorite scene is when Daniel goes to Mr. Miyagi’s workshop to thank him for fixing his bike. As he enters, he notices Mr. Miyagi pruning a bonsai tree. He invites Daniel to sit and trim a tree, but this makes Daniel very nervous:
Daniel: “No, I don’t know how to do this stuff. I may mess it up.”
Mr. Miyagi: “Close eye. Trust. Concentrate. Think only tree. Make a perfect picture. Wipe mind clean, everything but tree. Nothing exists, whole world…only tree. You got it? Open eyes. Remember picture? Make like picture. Just trust the picture.”
Daniel: “How do I know if my picture’s the right one?”
Mr. Miyagi: “If come from inside of you…always right one.”
Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel about visualization and bringing that “picture” to life. There’s a lesson in here for you too.
Do you find it difficult to make the necessary changes to achieve your health goals? Whether it’s losing excess weight, lowering your cholesterol, starting an exercise program or making healthier food choices, we all know what to do…but why is it so difficult to do it and to keep doing it?
Here’s a thought. Perhaps what’s holding you back is the simple fact that you aren’t enabling your mind to see yourself living in a healthy body. If you don’t own a healthy body, how can you live in a healthy body? If you don’t live it, how can you become it? Answer— you can’t!
This is so important, it’s worth repeating: If you don’t own a healthy body, how can you live in a healthy body? If you don’t live it, how can you become it? Answer— you can’t!
Right now, I want you to do as Mr. Miyagi instructed (with Melanie’s modifications):
“Close eye. Trust. Concentrate. Think only healthy body. Make a perfect picture. Wipe mind clean, everything but healthy body. Nothing exists, whole world…only healthy body. You got it? Open eyes. Remember picture? Make like picture. Just trust the picture.”
I want you to take it one step further. Don’t just see the picture—own it. Right this very moment, begin acting as if you already own a healthy body. After all, if you own it, you will live it and will make the necessary lifestyle choices to keep it—such as eating more fruits and vegetables and participating in regular physical activity. And if you live it, you will become that healthy picture.
In the words of Mr. Miyagi: “Make like picture.”
